For many other countries, what is Veterans' Day in the United States is Remembrance Day which, just as the American Memorial Day, honors those who have died for their country. The date 11November 1918 marked the end of the war on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleven month of the year. Canadian Major John McCrae, MD, witnessed the carnage at Flanders, treated the wounded and saw a good friend die. He composed the poem In Flanders Fields which immortalized the poppy as symbol of remembrance. |
